Women need access to birth control so they don’t have to have an abortion. Or at least that is what everyone seems to think. A lot of people are for the HHS Mandate because they think all women need access to birth control. They say that if there was access to more birth control than the abortion rate would drop. By saying this, they think that the Catholic Church will bow.
To the Catholic Church, birth control and abortion are two separate issues. We disagree with birth control because it acts as a barrier between a husband and wife. Notice I said husband and wife, not man and woman. There wouldn’t be enough proof in the world that birth control prevents abortion for the Catholic Church to accept birth control. Because birth control still prevents pregnancies that may be intended by God.
Recently a study was conducted in Spain that showed abortions actually doubled despite the increased availability of contraception. This study followed women from 1997 to 2007 and showed that when more birth control was available, more abortions were performed.
I would love for the secular media to discuss this. Please hold your breath with me. This isn’t news to them. In fact, this is very anti-news because it is anti-life. The secular media wants to shield us from the truth.
Why? Do they believe we can’t handle the truth? Or do they realize that the majority of Americans are so closed-minded that they won’t accept the truth for what it is.
More access to birth control equals more procreation. Don’t get me wrong, the Catholic Church is not against procreation…in marriage. But when birth control is used, there is a reason. And most of the time the reason is because a child is not wanted. When a child is not wanted, a child can be destroyed.
The HHS Mandate is an insult to the female race. This does not help us have more access to birth control. The HHS Mandate in reality is providing more opportunities for sexual encounters, mostly outside of marriage, that are not intended to produce a child. The HHS Mandate is only going to help increase the number of abortions.
So, are we a country for life or for death? It really comes down to that.
Thank you for your insightful article. May I add to it?
Re: paragraph #2 above – I don’t think the Catholic church considers abortion and birth control two separate issues, do they? Maybe it is stated simply for simplicity sake? When the church says that NO to birth control, it is because birth control separates the unitive and procreative functions of marital love, right? Well, birth control CAN result in the breaking of the 5th commandment. Let’s look closer – Birth control (the PILL) acts in three ways. The first way is that it CAN prevent ovulation. The Pill works in this way about 30% of the time. The second is that it modifies the acididy (pH) of the woman’s body(her uterus, specifically) therefore making it hostile to her husband’s sperm, (another 30% of the time THIS is the way in which the PILL works) and the third way is that it dehydrates the uterine lining this making a woman’s monthly period minimal (the last third of the time, THIS is the way in which the PILL works) NOTE: Vaginal yeast infections have been on the rise since the advent of the PILL partly (or perhaps wholey, due to the high usage of the PILL). That uterine dehydration process (drying up process) makes the womb inhospitable to a fertilzed egg – thus an abortion can be occurring without a woman even knowing. When I asked a local pharmacist about exactly HOW the PILL works, he handed over the folded up insert that is in every woman’s PILL prescription. Who reads it? Women trust their doctors to tell them the truth; I think that many doctors may not know how the PILL works. And, yes, more use of the PILL leads to MORE abortions, not fewer.
Agreed Anne!
I was going for simplicity sake but all the comments you make are correct regarding the pill. Many women don’t realize that the pill “dries them out” so no mucus can form. If mucus can’t form than a fertilized egg has nowhere to implant. If implantation doesn’t occur than a fertilized egg exits the body. Women don’t realize they can still get pregnant on the pill but the fertilized egg (baby!) has nowhere to develop.
It is quite sad to know so many babies are lost to abortion and so many babies are lost to the pill.
Thanks for your comment!
